Description:

Permaculture School Garden

The Grade 5 class at Musawenkosi Christian Academy has written letters about the upcoming garden. Above is one of these.

Sam and Robin traveled to SA in March 2023 and began designing the garden at the new school location. Initial work included the placement of two swales to mitigate the fast-rushing runoff during the rainy season. The effect should be a slowing and sinking of the water to recharge the soil for later watering of plants.

Starting in September of 2023, Robin will travel back to South Africa to finish the installment of the garden. Some fruit trees were planted in April and more will be planted in September and October. These trees will provide the 150-plus learners with nutritional snacks during school hours.

The small raised kitchen garden installed in March will be expanded to offer the school more produce for lunch. The vegetables most likely to be grown will be spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, and peppers.

Worm composting and chickens will also be added and possibly rabbits. The worms and chickens will be used to increase soil fertility. Chickens will also provide eggs and possibly meat at a later time. Rabbits would be used to provide manure and also meat in the future.

The older grade students will help with the installation and design.
